“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt being a father is that many things are beyond our control – and there’s no point letting that overwhelm us. It’s much more effective to stay calm and manage our emotions.”

Can you share a favourite ‘dad moment’ from the past year?

There have been so many wonderful moments that it’s hard to choose just one. But if I had to, it would be watching my elder daughter perform on stage. I was incredibly proud – she was the only one who executed the choreography almost perfectly (a definite proud dad moment!). When she spotted me in the audience and smiled, it really reminded me just how important it is to show up for her as much as possible as she grows up.

What's a challenge you've encountered as a father that has perhaps taught you the most?

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt is that many things are beyond our control – and there’s no point letting that overwhelm us. It’s much more effective to stay calm and manage our emotions.

Is there a parenting mantra or quote you live by?

“Live today as if it’s your last.” It might sound a little morbid, but if that day ever comes, I want to know I’ve spent meaningful time with my children.

How do you make time for self-care while balancing the roles of leader, colleague, and dad?

It really comes down to the art (and science) of communication. Whether it’s with my wife, kids, parents, or colleagues, clear and proactive communication is key. For example, I let my kids know in advance that I’ll be spending four hours a week on my hobby, tennis, so they’re mentally prepared for my absence and understand the importance of that personal time.

“Becoming a father has changed the way I view personal growth – I now think more consciously about the values I want to pass on to my daughter, and I recognise that preparing her for the future begins with how I live and lead by example.”

What is your proudest moment as a father?

Watching her take her very first step at just 10 months old – it was such a special and unforgettable milestone.

Are there any small habits or routines you’ve built to stay connected with your child?

I structure my work schedule so that I can be home before her bedtime and then continue working afterwards if needed. We also make it a point to go out as a family on weekends – it’s a chance for her to explore the world around her and for us to create lasting memories together.

Do you find that fatherhood has influenced how you show empathy or patience at work?

Definitely. It’s a constant reminder of kindness and understanding. I hope others will show my daughter when she’s older – and that perspective shapes how I interact with the people around me at work.

What advice would you give to fellow dads navigating career and family responsibilities?

There will always be trade-offs when trying to strike a balance but having open and mutual understanding with your partner is crucial. It creates the support system needed for your children to grow up in a stable and nurturing environment.

“People, like children, need space to learn, encouragement to take risks, and support when things don’t go as planned. In many ways, leadership is about walking alongside others.”

In what ways has becoming a parent reshaped your perspective on success?

Success used to be defined by achievements like promotions and career growth. While those are still important, becoming a father has taught me that true success also means being present. It’s about showing up for my daughter’s important moments while continuing to support the team. I now see both roles – at home and at work – as equally significant parts of the same journey.

Has becoming a father shifted your definition of what it means to be a role model?

Definitely. Being a role model now means more than just leading teams – it’s about leading by example. I want my daughter to learn kindness, resilience, patience, and balance as she grows up, which means I need to demonstrate these values daily, not just talk about them. And when I make mistakes – which I sometimes do – I try to show her how to take responsibility and move forward.

How do you unwind or recharge after a long day of juggling work and parenting?

I usually recharge with some late afternoon exercise – itenergises me and helps me reset. But honestly, nothing compares to the time I spend with my daughter. Her excitement and smile upliftme in a way that no song or podcast ever could.

What’s one thing you hope to do differently in the coming year — either as a parent or a professional?

This year, I hope to continue growing, both at home and at work. My focus is on being more present, staying grounded, and consistently showing up as the best version of myself for my team and my daughter.

“For me, integrity is key. I want my children to understand that honesty and doing the right thing are what truly matter, even when no one is watching. I also bring this value to my work, where I believe it helps build trust within families and teams.”

Has being a parent pushed you to grow in unexpected ways — emotionally, professionally, or personally?

Becoming a father changed me more than I expected. It has made me more patient, focused, and intentional – both in my career and personal life.Knowing that my actions influence someone’s world motivates me to continually work to be the best version of myself.

Do you think being a parent has affected your communication style — either at home or at work?

Being a parent hastaught me to slow down and listenattentively – an approach that is equally valuable at home and in the workplace. I’ve learned that how you communicate is just as important as the message itself, and clear, clam communication fosters better understanding with children and colleagues.

How has SUNRATE’s workplace culture supported your journey as a father?

I genuinely appreciate how SUNRATE supports work-life balance. The workplace flexibility here makes it easier for me to be present at home without compromising my performance at work. That kind of trust and support makes a big difference for parents like me who want to give their best in both roles.

In your journey of fatherhood, what has been the steepest learning curve?

The biggest challenge has been accepting that I won’t always get it right – and that’s acceptable. Kids don’t expect perfection; they need consistency and love. Letting go of unrealistic expectations has helped me become more adaptable, both as a parent and as a professional.

Let’s take a moment to recognise Darren, Derek, Ridho, Harsya and all the devoted fathers whose commitment at work and home inspires us every day. Happy Father’s Day!
